In the short time since the first release of the Digital Harinezumi, this tiny camera has already become an essential tool for visual expression. One might say that its 3 million pixel (previously 2 million) and a far from advanced CMOS are not, so to speak, the vanguard of technological development.

Digital Harinezumi is a new movie camera designed by Superheadz in Tokyo. The image sensor has been customized to offer a quality that is reminiscent of Super 8 films. It shoots movies at standard VGA resolution (640x480). The Digital Harinezumi uses an external microSD card and is powered by a replaceable CR2 battery.

The Inventor Says:  『Bring fun to digital!』

That was the slogan that launched Digital Harinezumi in March of 2009.  The word spread rapidly across the globe, receiving orders from museum shops in New York to bookshops in Hong Kong, even a digital gadget store in Dubai – they sold out immediately. And, in November of 2009, Digital Harinezumi 2 was born.

Many say the best aspect of this camera is the way the photos turn out. For me, I tend to believe the charm of this camera is the “Form”, or even the “Existance”.

In our day and age where we seek the newest and most advanced gadgets, this camera is total nonsense. However, Digital Harinezumi can offer you the "fun" you cannot gain from other cameras. This "fun" suddenly becomes a part of your sentiment, affecting not only those around you but, inevitably, also the photos and movies you produce.

Anyone can take a photo by pressing the shutter. Especially with digital cameras – there is no magic involved. The question, however, is this: how is it that you and I can take photos of the same subject, yet the result still differs? It is bizarre to consider that there is “Emotion” captured in each individual photograph, but i believe it’s true. And the emotion which this camera captures is "fun".

This isn’t a technique nor is it marketing; more than anything it's a state of mind. Digital Harinezumi has evolved to it's second state, bringing our idea of a “Fun Camera” closer to reality.  One key point of the Digital Harinezumi is that it never is the same. We intend to tweak the image quality with every new lot, every month. Some will even have an entirely different lens. This is our plan, to bring even more views, more uniqueness to each of these cameras. Don't worry about asking what the quality of the next one will be, we do not even know, it is much like the personality of a new born baby.

Digital Harinezumi 2's movies now have sound!

There seems to be a lot of people unaware of this important fact so excuse us while we shout it out again. Hearing sound come from this little body makes you feel like Guliver or perhaps the resident of a bug house.. Really, it's just a lot of fun!

You may be thinking.. sound? That's no big deal. That's what this camera is about though. This little guy's features are nothing special. But by adding such regular features to the tiny body of Harinezumi.. Hey Presto! A new experience is born

But, think about it. Begining with photos, then adding movement and colour and eventually sound; these were all considered big breakthroughs in history. They may seem like simple achievments to us now. However, to us, the purpose of this camera is to once again enjoy the experiences these advances can bring us.

Why is Digital Harinezumi loved?

Since it hit the stores this camera has caught the attention of many audiences, ranging from professional video installation artists and film directors to actresses and musicians. It finds a place in their lives and, sometimes, even in their artwork.

But, what allures these people?  It isn’t a special kind of sensibility only these professionals can comprehend. In fact what draws everyone, even us, to the Digital Harinezumi is quite simple.

You cannot take a good photo with Digital Harinezumi using well known photography techniques. You can only capture a modest photo at best.
